Methven is situated about an hour’s drive south of Christchurch airport along the inland scenic route 72. Predominantly a farming town, in winter Methven is transformed into Canterbury’s snow sports centre. Offering the perfect antidote for those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and take your skiing and riding to the next level on uncrowded slopes. There are several commercial and many smaller club ski fields in the region, with Mt Hutt being the largest with consistently the best snow quality in Australasia and around 25 mins drive from Methven. The Commercial fields cater for beginners and ski enthusiasts alike where the club fields offer the more experienced and adventurous something that is totally unique to Canterbury.
Beyond the ski fields closer to the main range there is Canterbury’s own mini Alaska where Methven Heliski offer a world class heli experience with over 20 years in operation
Operated by two clubs, the Temple Basin Ski Club, and the Canterbury University Snow Sports Club, the ski area has 3 rope tows, two on site lodges, two shelters and a ski school and ski shop. For the freestyles, Central Park has jumps, rollers, rails and boxes for most abilities. This terrain has been Methven Heliski’s home for the final 30 years and spans three mountain ranges in the South Island of New Zealand. Mount Taylor Lodge is quietly situated, 3 minutes walk from Methven’s central facilities, and offering dazzling views of Mount Hunt and the Southern Alps.
It will carry up to 200 per hour up the slopes, double the current T Restrict capacity. For the more adventurous, head up the world’s yes that’s right! Offering splendid long natural half pipes, chutes this is skiing and riding at its best. Porters is a family focused ski area with a complete range of ski and snowboard terrain to suit all abilities. It has two T bar lifts Main T restrict and Ridge T bar which produce access to the whole mountain and a learners’ rope tow in a dedicated learners’ area.
Broken River Ski Area, located in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, boasts some of Fresh Zealand's superior off piste, soft snow skiing and snowboarding.
