Because we want to provide our customers with the best quality product we now manage the whole process from the fibre selection to processing from farm to fibre artist. From sheep farms in the South Island of New Zealand we only accept wool from ethically produced, grass fed sheep, free from mulesing. When the mill went into liquidation, joining a long list of mills around New Zealand to close, with it went a critical part of our heritage, raising uncertainties about the future supply and quality of the sliver. We employed four very skilled and qualified staff from Qualityarns who have over a hundred years of combined experience in wool processing.
The wool is washed scoured using a standard aqueous treatment at degrees with an eco friendly detergent that is biodegradable and breaks down quickly in water. In 1934 Walter Ashford founded Ashford Handicrafts Ltd, a company that has become a world leader in the manufacture of quality spinning wheels, weaving looms and textile equipment. Available in natural wood or finished with eco friendly water based lacquer. At our woollen mill in Milton, New Zealand, we source and process high quality fleeces and fibres.

Over the 30 years I have owned Ashford wheels I have appreciated how Richard and his team listen to their customers and users making changes and improvements to their already great wheels.
